Instructional design for workplace training

I design training that lets people practise real tasks before they do them on the job, including simulations, games, scenario-based activities and practical learner resources.

About me

I am an instructional designer based in Brisbane, Australia. I design training for adults, with a focus on practical workplace tasks.

My background is in adult and vocational education. I have written more than 50 qualifications, including complete qualifications in accounting, conveyancing, finance and mortgage broking that I wrote from scratch, and I have built simulated workplace environments so that learners could practise the work in a realistic setting. I have also designed assessments, learner guides and trainer resources across construction, information technology, business, tourism and property.

I now work on non-accredited training for workplaces. I am most interested in the moment a learner makes a decision on the job, and I design activities that let them make that decision, see what follows, and try again.

I also storyboard and build games. I use game design in learning activities, and I am currently building a game of my own for release on Steam.

Dock 3 Receiving

Warehousing and logistics simulation

A receiving storeperson books a supplier delivery into a warehouse management system. The delivery contains a unit-of-measure discrepancy that the paperwork does not flag. If the learner misses it, the simulation shows the effect three days later at picking, replays their own actions, and gives them a second attempt.

Register 3 Returns

Retail simulation

A register operator serves three customers with returns during a busy shift. Each return needs a different decision under the same policy: one to refer, one to refund to the original card instead of cash, and one to complete as store credit. A week later the store’s reports show what each decision cost.

Workplace simulator library

A series of short browser-based simulations for different industries, each built around one decision that is commonly made incorrectly at work.

Ticket Closed

A game set on a corporate IT helpdesk, in which the player reads and logs support tickets under time pressure. It is being built in Godot for release on Steam.

In development

Online perfumery program

A self-paced, one-year certificate program in perfumery and oud making, delivered through pre-recorded video, detailed learner guides and a companion podcast.

In development

Fitness course for first-time fighters

An eight-module SCORM course that prepares people for their first armoured combat tournament, covering fitness, nutrition, mindset and habits, with a learner guide and planning templates.
